Today, the School of Rocks powered by IRIS launches with 10 schools for the first 6-week term.

What is the School of Rocks?

It’s a woman-led community offering a toolkit to empower everyone to find joy in off-road cycling. The School of Rocks builds skill, confidence and community by organising a curriculum of rides over 6-week terms. Rides are fun, regular and gently progress in difficulty. Riders learn and grow in a supportive environment within their local community.

The School of Rocks provides an alternative space to those who don’t feel represented in the traditional gravel scene. We particularly welcome women, riders from the LGBTQIA+ community, and riders of all shapes and sizes, skin colour, ethnicity, age, background and ability to discover the joy of exploring by bike.

The School of Rocks format is perfect for building community in your local area or incorporating in an existing community to attract new faces and develop existing riders. Anyone wanting to run the School of Rocks curriculum becomes an official ‘ROCKstar’ and will be mentored by The School of Rocks founder, Eleanor Jaskowska & supported by IRIS’s Head of Marketing, Lexi Brown. All ROCKstars are provided with the necessary tools to implement the curriculum and benefit from the support of the ROCKstar community to exchange knowledge and learn from each other.

Why did IRIS support this initiative?

Earlier this year, IRIS conducted some customer and market research and one of the biggest barriers to participation in cycling was the lack of cycling infrastructure that helped women feel safe on the roads whilst cycling. IRIS decided that the best solution to this barrier, was to find a way to get women off the road and onto the trails! Riding on trails requires some additional technical skills which is why we partnered with The School of Rocks.

The School of Rocks creates a unique opportunity for IRIS to facilitate the creation of a global community that can grow and learn together to develop their off-road riding skills and confidence on the bike. By creating a curriculum and identifying local ROCKstars to implement the 6-week curriculum, we can help anyone who joins to learn, have fun and feel the transformative power of the ride.

The School of Rocks mantras are:

🟣 Routes not races
🟣 Community over competition
🟣 Trails not traffic
🟣 Progress over points
🟣 Snacks over stacks

How can I join a Schools of Rocks ride?

Bath, Bristol, Cardiff, Clevedon, Edinburgh, London, Nottingham, North Lakes, Oxford

The Netherlands

Can’t make a ride? Check with your local ROCKstar if it’s okay to miss a week (perhaps you can do the ‘homework’ in your own time! 😉) Some rides may also fill up quickly as we run a 6 participants to 1 ride leader policy for safety. If you need to drop out, please let your ROCKstar know as soon as possible so that your place can be given to someone else! Equally if a ride is already full, let your ROCKstar know you want to be on the reserve list!

Sign up to a ride by clicking the button below (each location has it’s own tab, make sure you click the right one at the top! If you have any questions, drop the School of Rocks an email or shred into their Instagram DM!

How can I set up my own School of Rocks?

It’s so rewarding to build a community of riders, to grow as friends, as well as watch each other transform into confident gravel shredders! If you’re interested in becoming a ROCKstar and starting your own local School of Rocks for the next term in Spring 2022 then the next step is to speak directly with the founder; Eleanor.

ROCKstars are required to commit to the 6-week term and plan routes according to the curriculum’s requirement to progress difficulty with each weekly ride. The School of Rocks team will support on sign up tools, insurance and liability and fun weekly content challenges!
