Roel van Eekelen and Yara Ruby are both illustrators and a couple, based in Rotterdam. It is unavoidable to meet Roel in the Rotterdam ‘cycling scene’ as he seems to ride his bike just as much as he draws his comical prints. Roel’s work can be characterized by its simplicity, light-heartedness and humour. And that last part he has in common with Yara, whose drawings are cheeky, cute and colourful. You can recognize Yara’s work by the crunchy pencil-drawn lines and minimal shapes. I invited them to work on this project together, as I really appreciate both their styles and was curious how this would work in them collaborating.
“We challenged ourselves by combining forces for the very first time, Roel from the cyclist’s perspective with his (sometimes annoying) love for cycling and my own female perspective. Also by combining our two different styles, graphic and illustrative.
The result? A design with powerful women who throw down watts on the pedals and battle it out in the sprint. Venga Venga!” – Yara Ruby
Roels’ work can be found on his website and Instagram. It’s definitely worth checking out his Cranky Club page as well for the not-so-serious riders out there. More cheeky illustrations can be found on Yara’s website and Instagram page.
